Community Conversation on Aging

Date: August 20, 2022
Organizers: AGE+ and Four Rivers Healthy Community
Locations: Four sites across Malheur County — Ontario, Nyssa, Vale, and Jordan Valley
Total Attendance: 182 county residents

Why This Conversation Matters

Oregon is changing. By 2030, adults aged 65 and older will equal the number of children under 18 in the state. In Malheur County, the older adult population is projected to grow 32% between 2016 and 2035 — while the child population shrinks by 3%.

At the same time, Malheur County is currently 34% Latino/a/x, yet many support services lack cultural specificity for older adults in this community.

What Residents Said

Community members were asked what a healthy aging community looks like and what assets already exist. Responses highlighted:

  • Quiet, open spaces
  • Good, caring people
  • A sense of community connection

Identified needs included:

  • Comprehensive and accessible healthcare
  • Flexible transportation options
  • Food access
  • Housing stability
  • Social activities and community engagement
  • Help navigating support services

Why We Kept This Page

The data gathered from this conversation — particularly the demographic projections — continues to inform how 4RHC and its partners plan programs and advocate for resources for older adults in the Treasure Valley.
